If you were to look up "sustainable" in the Collins Dictionary, you'd find it defined as "capable of being sustained," particularly in the context of economic development or energy sources. Those words—"capable of being sustained"—tumbled through my mind as I sat back in my mother chair, utterly exhausted. We ladies of a certain biological age know all too well that trying to sustain the life we had before oestrogen withdrawal is like going into battle without armour.
Sleepless nights, weight gain, aching muscles, and brain fog were just the beginning of my personal war. And timing, oh the timing – just as my children were sprinting out the door to launch their own lives with all the zest and energy that had seemingly abandoned me. Even through the fog, the bittersweet emptiness of this double transition hit home hard.
Mythical "Easy" Menopause
I have this friend, one of those rare creatures who sailed through menopause with barely a ripple. "Just a few night sweats," she'd say, and I'd joke it was because she was already insane—though we both knew that was nonsense. She's the most calm and measured woman I know. That was until the day I witnessed her complete meltdown when her teenage son accidentally splashed water over her freshly touched-up roots. Aha... finally, proof that none of us truly escape unscathed!
Finding My Way Through
Most of us navigate this journey with whatever coping mechanisms we can find. Some choose hormone replacement therapy, others opt for natural remedies, and yes, occasionally a large bottle of gin enters the equation. While I wouldn't recommend the latter as a long-term solution, it led to some memorable moments—like explaining to my partner that "there's no place like home until you have a menopausal woman in it" before suggesting he seek counselling (and promptly passing out).
During those years, the concept of sustaining anything seemed laughable, except perhaps for my record-breaking step count while searching for misplaced keys, purse, phone and that elusive thing I went upstairs for... three times. Yet society expects us to maintain our professional lives, manage our households, and juggle countless other responsibilities without missing a beat. Finding humour in these moments became my survival strategy.
Breaking Free from Silence
For those struggling with debilitating symptoms: you're not alone, and you deserve support. Don't let any healthcare provider dismiss your concerns as "just your age" or treat menopause as a medical death sentence. Speak up, reach out, and remember that a punch bag makes a much better stress reliever than your partner's head (legally speaking, of course).
Standing on the Other Side
Now at 54, having weathered this personal storm, I've gained perspective. While I may not have the face of my 30-year-old self or the energy of my pre-menopausal days, I've discovered something better: wisdom, acceptance, and yes, the ability to sit next to someone who's chewing without contemplating homicide.
A New Understanding of Sustainability
This journey has taught me that sustainability isn't just about environmental consciousness—it's about adapting, evolving, and finding new ways to thrive. As women, we've been practicing sustainability our entire lives, constantly adjusting to our changing bodies, roles, and circumstances.
Fashion: A Reflection of Growth
My relationship with fashion has evolved alongside my personal journey. Gone are the days of impulse purchases and trend-chasing. Instead, I've embraced a wardrobe that reflects who I've become—thoughtful, comfortable in my skin, and mindful of my impact on the world. Quality pieces that adapt to my changing body, natural fabrics that keep me comfortable through temperature fluctuations, and timeless styles that make me feel confident have replaced the fast fashion that once filled my closet.
The Wisdom of Years
Perhaps the greatest gift of surviving menopause is the wisdom to pass on to younger generations. We understand now that sustainability isn't just about environmentally friendly materials or ethical production – it's about creating a legacy of conscious choices. It's about teaching our daughters and sons that true beauty lies in how we treat ourselves, each other, and our planet.
